The Opportunity

Opened in 1979, the Clairemont Swimming Pool needs facility renovations. From repairing the pool deck to installing new windows and a shade cover over the existing seating area, the list of projects is very long.

Community members visited the pool site for a tour led by City employees in mid-2022. Together, they identified more than 30 opportunities that need work and created a priority list of renovation projects. Preliminary funding sources have been identified for each project, along with timing.

There are currently 14 pools operated and managed by the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department, and nearly all of them have had some renovations and upgrades completed in the last five to seven years. The identified needs for the Clairemont Swimming Pool facility will bring the location up to standards and on par with the other swimming pools in operation, and will aim to meet the expectations of the public – families, seniors, youth, and others who currently use the pool and for future swimmers as well. Pool users include residents of Clairemont, Bay Park, Bay Ho, Kearny Mesa, Linda Vista, Pacific Beach, and Mission Valley.

Clairemont and its adjacent neighborhoods in the City of San Diego are going through a renaissance of their own. Property values have grown exponentially. Our school sites are becoming modernized with facility renovations, new construction, beautiful landscaping, and the creation of shared use recreational facilities. New high-density housing communities are coming soon. Nearly $2.5 million from the state of California has been earmarked to bring much-needed facility improvements of the adjacent South Clairemont Recreation Center – but no funds from this grant is allocated to the Clairemont Pool. Our pool should not be left behind in the progress of Clairemont.

In its nearly 45-year history, thousands of San Diegans have learned to swim, participated in youth swim and water polo leagues, became certified as lifeguards, and have worked to keep our community safe at this facility.

And now it’s time for the Clairemont Swimming Pool to begin renovations to preserve and enhance the facility as it approaches its 50th anniversary in 2029. Our fiscal sponsor is the South Clairemont Recreation Council. We look forward to cultivating relationships with other civic groups to improve the pool and surrounding park area.
